Locations/Programs: KIDS CAFE®
In Savannah, Georgia in 1989, two young brothers were discovered late one night in the kitchen of their housing project’s community center. The older brother had broken into the kitchen to feed himself and his younger brother.
In response to this glaring example of childhood hunger in their community, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia started the first Kids Cafe®. In 1993, America’s Second Harvest—The Nation’s Food Bank Network launched the national Kids Cafe program. More than 1,600 Kids Cafe sites are operating in the United States today.
Of those receiving emergency food in Arizona, 41 percent are children and seniors. The mission of Kids Cafe is to alleviate childhood hunger in Arizona by providing nutritious meals in a safe, accessible and nurturing environment to children at-risk of hunger…because no child deserves to go to bed hungry.
In addition to an evening meal, Kids Cafe sites offer children homework assistance and a chance to exercise their talents in art and sports. Many sites offer computer and nutrition education as well.
How can you help hungry children? Contact us at kidscafe@firstfoodbank.org or (602) 343-5661 to discuss which option below works for you.
DONATE: Because the program is unable to use donated food, your monetary donation the Kids Cafe program is critical. We need purchased product, and every dollar donated provides enough for one meal.
VOLUNTEER: Without the support of volunteers, the Food Bank would be unable to serve so many Kids Cafe meals or hold administrative costs at four percent. Volunteers are essential to the program, helping to prepare meals.
SPONSOR: Consider sponsoring the program to make a substantial difference in the lives of Arizona’s needy children. From multinational corporations to locally owned, businesses help the Kids Cafe program prosper.
START A KIDS CAFE: Consider hosting a Kids Cafe program. The Kids Cafe at St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance provides food to sites throughout the Valley. Kids Cafe partners with area churches, schools, community centers, and city parks and recreation departments to provide a secure and safe environment for children.
